Why is the focus set to infinity?

It has been suggested that one mask the aperture
with a thin piece of sheet metal with two holes
punched in it. When the two images are superimposed,
the thing is focussed. Of course that means outer
zones are in focus and you may be more interested
in the central part of the lens. I wonder if it
would be good to put a red filter over one punched
hole and blue over the other. I've never tried
this stuff but it sounds cool.
