Uh, yeah.  8-)  

I wonder if you could make the lenses match by changing the
separation of the front and back halves of the lens slightly.

To check lens match, you could hang a two-line target on the
wall and look at the image with a comparator.  Might be 
sensitive enough.  To get more sensitive might be too 
expensive so it would be better to go Joel's way.
