This must be pretty thin cardboard to pass
light. I'm considering laminating some black
craft paper to the front of the mounts. Don't
know if it will help and will be a bit of work
but it should be easy to trim with an exacto
knife.

This reminds me, ever taken any stereo pics. 
of the moon? I understand one shot at moonrise 
and one near moonset will give you a base separation
determined by the earth's rotation and your
latitude.
