David replied to this and mentions sitting in the ortho seat.
My "front row" seat (there was also an empty row of chairs in
front of me) was probably about 8 feet from the screen.  The
projectionist at the back of the room was pointing out the
same small details I was looking at, so I don't think the
viewing distance was a significant factor.

Yes, and in 35mm the win will probably be by a "blowout."  What I'm
curious about is whether MF stereo projection makes it a much more
comptetive game.

That's a good point.  But considering only the optical quality of
the viewing experience, apart from separate sociological issues,
projection will always fall short.  (As indicated by your observation
above about counting the cat's whiskers.)
