The best method I've seen (other than either Jamie or Bob's (?) use of
expandable plastic reels, which I've never seen but sounds easy) is to
take one stainless steel reel with a capacity film-length wise of what
you need (either 35mm, 120, or 220, 70mm, etc*), cut the center 4
posts, and insert extensions, welding them in place to make an 8" wide
reel. Make sure 1. that the OUTSIDES of the spirals are exactly as far
apart as your film is wide, 2. that the beginning and ends of the
spirals line up, if you follow, and 3. that the spirals are perfectly
parallel, obviously. Cutting slots in a minimum of 3 pieces of wood to
hold the spirals in place while you weld the center post extensions
seems to be the easiest method.

* I've seen 70mm reels with capacities of 4' (standard tank diameter),
8.5', 16' and heard of them in 32' and 100' lengths.
