I think you are better off with a film scanner. I use one which can only
scan 36x24mm, though it is possible to get film scanners that will scan
the whole neg at one go. I don't understand your reference to slides,
scanners usually take neg strips, though you will need to adapt most neg
carriers I've seen to scan full frame.
Software is available that will stitch the two scans, but I find it more
satisfactory to do the job manually in Photoshop - it only takes a minute
and you can be sure to get the match to the nearest pixel. Of course you
need quite a lot of memory to work with large files.
I don't have the manual to hand (and its in Russian), but the figures you
give seem reasonable. DOF is in any case very dependent on final image
size, and in the end sharpness is a subjective concept.
