creating digital panos

Has any of you digital imaging experts got any tips for creating really
large files with panorama tools.

I have 128 MB RAM and total of 2GB Virtual memory (with swap space)
I want to create a large image made from 7 scanned images (rectilinear 27
degree HFOV)

I have joined them up in a final image with total width of <1000 pixels but
to get a reasonable sized image I guess I will need about 25000 pixels
across the full image. This requires 1.5 GB of memory and takes for
ever....!

am I going too large?, what is required for a reasonable res image?
is there any tips for panorama tools only to output the strip of image that
you are creating (rather than the full 360 * 180 degree) which is less than
1/4 of the full file....

any hints appreciated, thanx,

	Martin. (Sydney, Australia)
