Dear Simon,
When assessing the possible effects/applications/benefits/impact of a
homepage named "Expanded View from behind a Rock, by Simon N, East
Orange.", consider the following:
You have already reached immortality in Matters Printed.
But, within 10-20 years, hardly anyone will remember you from
printed media. Heck, the next generation might not even know what
printed matters are. And even if, after another generation most of
those ancient printed matters will have been reduced to dust.
Soooo....if you really want to achieve immortality you'll have to do
better than that.
And that is where your homepage comes in.
No generation before could create immortality with such little effort
and money....once seen the light of dawn, it is impossible to erase
your photographic tracks from this planet. What happens on this list
is volatile....no archive, no storage....but your homepage would get
recommendation on Usenet, after which you would be trapped in dozens
of search engines for ever.
More blunt: it's the ultimate ego trip on this planet. Only ones
work being send into space with something like a Sojourner might be
better, but what do aliens know about photography?
To assure that next generations will also be able to visit your site,
the following note:
Unless your heirs will be left with only debts, you can add a note
to your will that a fund/trust must be formed to pay for hosting
your web page on a server forever, just like you are paying now for
a full account at your provider.
(if the life expectancy of providers wasn't so short, you could have
considered a one time payment, after which interest took care of the
rest (I wouldn't trust my heirs either, not to mention
legacy-lawyers....;-)).
Additional benefits:
- my grandkids would not question the condition of my braincells when
I talked about the fun with we had with an old guy living behind a
rock, singlefingerly typing like a machine gun (sonnofagun!)
- if someone on a mailinglist or in a newsgroup asks about a Simon
Wide camera, all I would have to do is pointing them to your
homepage. Saves me a bunch of work....:-))
PS: I also recommend a hit-counter on your webpage. They call it
vanity-counter for a good reason....one more ego-trip....;-))
PPS: add a clause to the web-hosting contracts that screwing up
web-counters by providers will cost them huge amounts of money, if
only for emotional disruption....wish I had that in my contract, I
would have been rich by now....;-((
