Thanks for the ring info Ron... found some sources for brass, 220
commercial bronze, and 510 phosphor bronze in 1/8 inch sheets.  I'm really
looking forward to actually seeing a ring gear and the mounting hardware.
I figure with a dial indicator I should be able to set up a gear pretty
well.  It occurred to me that a lot of banding problems should be solvable
by backtracking:  One band on a 360 degree exposure is probably a defect
in the ring gear.  Multiple bands evenly spaced point to a defective
pinion gear.  Intermitent banding could be from a chance encounter between
one marginal pinion gear and a similar ring gear. Something tells me this
is one of those tidy theories that may not help much in real practice.
