pano & wide angle

What is the difference between a pano & an ordinary wide angle?
If it is just the crop, then why bother to buy a pano? 
But I understand there are manytypes of panos; so which type is actually
able to give me a wide angle ( around 200 degrees) without a distortion
& by not just rcopping the image?
