dear steve- please tell simon what or who is the  the source of the question because it is so perfect that it would appear to be a ringer.
it can be answered at several different levels. i hesitate to answer out of my pool of forty years experience. my answers might offend, frinstance....

What is the difference between a pano & an ordinary wide angle?
If it is just the crop, then why bother to buy a pano?
But I understand there are manytypes of panos; so which type is actually
able to give me a wide angle ( around 200 degrees) without a distortion
& by not just rcopping the image?
so let's just say that it is generally a ratio and this includes the narrow mind.
simon says! thank you, ahmad.
