On the contrary!
I came very close to accomplishing this feat last year when I was bored.
the rotational speed of the drum on a Horizon was calculated at
1/5s on fast and 5 sec on slow. Then you figure out how wide the
slit is at whichever speed with a caliper or ruler.
then you figure out how many slits widths in the length of time
it takes the drum to rotate. Then you have a digital timer with 
auto-reset to continually trigger a powered down studio flash or
thyristor flash. The test film came out with very very narrow overlaps.
