Lens Flare

Hi,

I've been shooting with the Fuji G617 camera for a few years and have yet to 
understand how some shots I've seen with the sun in the shot (usually late 
day, sunsets) don't have lens flare. 

I know that if you put the sun in the center of the frame you can usually 
defeat lens flare, and I've read that a small apperature will help, but the 
shots I'm talking about have the sun off center left or right and in the 
upper half of the frame.

Any suggestions, tricks or such would be of great help.
