I've noticed a large number of posts are related to using 120/220 film
adaptors to get panorama type pictures. I went through a similar
experience some time ago. Thought I would share my experience.
I enjoy shooting panoramas and tried the usual economy methods; panorama
single use, cropping 120 and 35mm, etc., but was never happy with the
results. I like to print large, usually 8x20. I kept running into the
same problem. No matter what route you take, you end up with something
non-standard.
Then I bought an old 4x5 Calumet with a 90mm Angulon. I cut a standard
dark slide so I could get 2 2"x5" exposures per sheet of film. This has
proven to be very successful. I get 2 exposures per sheet, and I can
usually print both on the same piece of 16x20 paper. The advantages are
as follows:
1. Large array of film types available for 4x5. B/w, color pront,
transparencies (b/w and color), litho, infrared, etc.
2. Uses standard film holders, tanks, enlargers, etc.
3. Used 4x5 cameras, lenses, enlargers, etc. are very inexpensive.
4. Large array of lenses available, although some are quite expensive.
5. Excellent results with regard to detail and grain. Negative area is
approx. 10 aq. inches.
6. You still have a fully functional 4x5 system.
I have recently fabricated another set of dark slides which can produce
8 separate images on a single sheet of 4x5 film. I use this set to
determine optimum film speed (ISO), developing Zone system guides and
for checking new lenses by making a series of exposures using different
aperatures and shutter speeds while shooting at an 18% grey card. I will
be manufacturing these specialty dark slides soon and selling them on
Ebay.
