tim- bend, oregon has a place in my heart because that is where we were
based to do "the way west" a film based on a.b. guthrie's book "the big
sky." i was a panoramic stills specialist for united artists. the year
was 1966. two formats were used, 6x12 hulcher high speed 10fps
simon/wide and 6x17 simon/wide built from sawed in half mamiya press
camera, plugged mid camera. our hangout was walt's broasted chicken and
that restaurant across the street from trailways bus station. my 11 yr
old nephew. paul koch, was my assistant. ernst haas was also shooting on
this film job. director was andrew mclaglen, son of victor. andrew's
birthday was july 28th, same as mine. they were actually overturning
covered wagons. it was kirk douglas on horseback, high in mountains.
kirk's red coat highlighted bend's rugged
*scenery. there was a guy sneaking onto our set over and over. his
family was the name of the big lumber mill in eugene. i got to do
simon/wide pictures in the area of logs in the water. they cut the last
tree of the day from the forest for paul's instamatic. they toppled it
when he was ready. panoramic* from the movie set was used in westvaco
paper portfolio based on dozen or more of my panoramics. only one was
from this movie. another was from bond film "thunderball" taken in
nassau. that portfolio might be of interest to 6x17 users on the list.
from bend we took the overnight bus to sfo.ua flew me by chartered
lodestar into bend (diff airport name) as there was regional airline
strike at the time. ah, bend, oregon...a panoramist's dream! simon
