I like the idea of a site with links and archives; one interesting 
service used by some other photolists is Onelist - see www.onelist.com
also Egroups - www.egroups.com

these kinds of site provides have archives, links pages, chatgroups, 
vaults for resources, online polls, member lists, a calendar, databases etc.

The value of a newsgroup seems to go up as such parallel resources are 
fleshed out, esp. to newcomers...
