Having a Noblex and having the need for a scanner I too wanted a scanner
that could handle at least 4x5. I opted for the Epson 1200u Photo. I find
it to be fine for my intended use. I do lots of scans for the internet and
occasional for printing on my Epson 1200 printer. It does a fine job for
both of these needs and using Photoshop I can adjust the curves to hold the
dmax without artifacts. I just delivered a 40" print made from my scan and
it looked great.
To answer your question about contact prints, my guess would be that he only
has a B&W darkroom and not a color one or maybe he shoots transparency film.
Just a guess on my part though.
