The better 3-D movies of the 1950s proved that, in capable hands, the 
medium is *excellent* for storytelling. The best example, as I've said 
many times, is Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder." The director uses the 
depth to enhance the sense of claustrophobia in a film shot (nearly) 
completely indoors; and to give the audience a sense of being witnesses 
to the crime, by letting us "lurk" behind furniture and lampshades.

I've often wondered what brilliant work would be produced by the likes of 
Robert Altman, David Lynch, Oliver Stone, Wim Wenders, or so many others.
Of course you'd need "flagship" 3-D theaters to show these films in. 
Well, more work for us architects!
