My experience is quite different.

With my Pentax Beam splitter at a recommended f/8 on my Canon 50 mm, I get
an indicated DOF of under 5 feet to infinity. In looking at some of my old
beam splitter prints, they seem to be all quite sharp within this range,
even under an 8x loupe.

I never felt constrained by the DOF limitation you allude to. The extremely
vertical format of half frame can be quite challanging, however...
