This could be done by using any of the zoom designs but the 
problem is it's already too hard (read expensive) to make a 
reasonable wide-angle viewing lens let alone make a zoom lens 
which goes to wide angle.  A viewing lens is a lot harder to 
design than a camera lens because it has more constraints.  Also,
production of viewer lenses is less than production of camera 
lenses, adding to the cost.
