Sorry, that was unforgiveable.

Not an answer to your question but you raise a point: Do keep in 
mind that the light output of a lamp goes approximately with the 
3.6 power of the voltage while the life goes inversely according 
to approximately the _12th_ power of the voltage.  So do have a 
care!

Advice to the one who needs more medeecayshong: I had a similar 
problem with arc lamps in a hand held viewer until I contructed a 
forced convection water cell to put the stereo slide in.  That was 
the end of the problem with smoking slides.
