DIGITAL DREAM CAMERA
I saw the article in VIDEO about the new digital camcorders
and was pleasantly surprised to see they included a still
mode. It reminds me of my "dream" camera I wrote to this
list about several years ago. It was a digital camera with
two lenses and image sensors that could be used for 2D or 3D
video (still or motion). One lens/CCD could be detached
for hyper stereo or with long enough cables or some sort of
wireless link, as a second camera viewpoint that could be
edited together from a perfectly synchronized tape.
Color/monochrome, resolution, still/motion, 2D or 3D would
be options the photographer could select before or after
capturing the images to tape or optical disk. Several
camcorders (SHARP had one) had an additional lens/CCD for
wide angle or PIP effects. Now Sony and Panasonic have the
digital camcorders and what the reviews desecribed as high
resolution color LCD viewfinders. The viewfinders could be
paired for a head mount display. Multiplexing two digital
video signals onto tape would be the last hurdle, the
hardware is all being produced now.
I think that if someone produced a camcorder like this
that could switch between 2D and 3D with a good companion
HMD, they could sell a lot more than Toshiba did with their
dedicated machine. A two camera setup like this with
synchronized sound would seem to be a wedding videographers
dream. Of course the people on this list know what an
insignificant piece of the market we are to Canon, Nikon
etc..
