Re the dissolves:  Seems as if the problem was solved by the Dissolver.
Bob Brackett very clearly has an excellent circuit in his projector,
which, since he is evidently making no more, he might be willing to
share.  Your random dimmer almost certainly won't be adequate either 
in terms of power handling capability or,usually, in terms of contour
and not infrequently because of some hysteresis which might be annoying.

He's an eminently approachible fellow (as well as an outstanding
designer.)
