The Chicago Stereo Camera Club projects their annual juried exhibition (the
"Lighthouse Show") using two TDC projectors and a dissolve device something
like what you describe.  As I recall, though, it uses linear, "slide-pot"-style
dimmers, which are driven by rods whose ends ride in a couple of slots in a
circular lucite plate.  The slots are short segments of a spiral, so that when
the operator turns the lucite plate, the rods move in opposite directions.
(It's kind of hard to describe in words, as you can see).  The device is
beautifully made, and works like a charm.  Alas, as I recall, the man who
designed and built it is no longer alive.
