Thanks for the clarification Bob!

The purpose behind my question regarding lens separation is to determine
how practical twinning some point-n-shoot cameras is. 

The hoped-for advantages of such a setup are 'grabbed' pictures
(point-n-shoot!), and hyperstereo ability.

Now I'm wondering if autofocus is a good way to take stereo photos, or if
it's even reasonable to expect a healthy percentage of pleasing shots when
shooting without the control a manual camera offers.
