3d@xxxxx
Dr. GAT brings up some valid points of debate on that worldwide topic,
3d@xxxxxx
George muses: "Is expo an exhibition or a competition?"
I saw the 1st expo as more of an exhibition, showing
(a) that we Internet noodgies actually produce--and can share--stereoscopic
imaging (SI) and
(b) all of the neo-new-bees *what* the various SI formats look and feel like!
I gained from the 1st expo: a sense of community with fellow-photo-3d-ers
and a spark to get me started in taking various forms of SIs.
IMFHO, expo2 should have:
+ Many SI Formats. Again, to remove the mystery and expand everyone's
horizons.
+ Many Viewers. To learn, we must view. This necessitates a larger (more
expensive, slower traveling) shipping container; it's a drawback; but it's
part of what makes the 3d@xxxx concept unique. It also limits the number of
places the expo will visit. You have to be pretty serious about seeing the
expo when you know that you will have to spend more than US$3 to send it on
its way.
+ Competitive Entries. Many photo-3d citizens will enjoy being in a quirky
competition in which the whims and fancies of the amateur judges will rule
the day. Each person simply supplies a few words about each entry and a list
of favorites. Comments are helpful and usually convey gratitude. The
beginner needs feedback (but may not want to formally compete). The entrants
need to be rewarded--you may get a fun prize; each will get some helpful
comments and healthy criticism; and, of course, each gets to view a Package
of Wonder, Education, and Delight. These votes and comments should be
publicized on photo-3d. The stream of jibes ;*) and praise will create
anticipation for those yet to view expo2. We shouldn't be afraid to
broadcast how we voted or what we did not care for. Heck, comments are only
a reflection of our moods and reactions. We aren't trained, detached judges;
we're just people, friends, and critics. I've been told my images are "sure
to win competitions," and I've been asked, "What in the world were you
thinking when you shot that piece of junk?" I respect and enjoy both types
of feedback.
+ Noncompetitive Entries. If someone doesn't want to see comments on their
images posted in photo-3d, their entries would go into the "entry only"
category and would be ineligible for feedback and prizes.
IMBHO, expo2 should avoid:
- Being a quickie, whiz-bang postal circuit governed by a set of ancient
rules. 3d@xxxxx are a new concept. They were born of the Internet, and
should have a personality far removed from a formal PSA Stereo Circuit.
Expos are a panorama of technologies and a chance to learn.
Let's keep the positive aspects of the 1st expo. It shed light on of all
those mysterious cyber friends and all of those grotesque and ill-defined
image formats and viewing techniques that I had heard so much about.
