I did the same thing to my Revere many years ago and also get excellent 
shots via the self-turning-off-thingee-circuitry in my flash, using the 
guide settings in back of the flash. The synch is X, so any shutter speed 
works - I keep it at 1/200 sec., unless I want some background light to 
show. The camera side contacts were too wide for the flash, so I stick a 
small nail between the flash and one side contact - always keep a few nails 
with me in a small bottle in case of loss. 

By the way, has anyone the coupled lens cap for the Revere for sale? Mine 
is somewhere in Barcelona since 1974 :-(
