Re: Anaglyph Movie on the 3-D Web

I've had a few requests for clarification on my previous post
regarding the anaglyph movie on the web site.

This is an animation that I produced using Macromedia's program
called "Director". Usually one who uses this software will produce
a multi-media piece and make a *.exe file with it, and distribute
the movie accordingly. No additional software is required to run it.

The movie on the web site is produced exactly the same way, and then
it is run through a compression routine to make the file smaller.

In order to see it with a Netscape browser, Netscape had to create
additional commands within their language, and allow Macromedia to
install a plug-in that would recognise and uncompress the file.

WHERE IS IT?

The movie is the first thing you will see when you log onto
the 3-D Web. Home Page... Top of page...

1) You'll either see the movie... and be very pleased.

2) You'll see nothing and wonder what the hell I'm talking about!

3) You'll see a broken icon... and wonder what's wrong!

If you encounter #2 or #3 then you are not running Netscape 2.0b4 with
the Shockwave plugin. (as previously described) This info is available
at the bottom of the home page.

NOTE: Your QuickTime or other video/movie viewers will not help you here.

WHY DID YOU DO THIS?

I'm very impressed with this format, and believe it will play a
significant role in the future if handled properly by its makers.
(Unlike Beta Video).

The shockwave movie allows total interaction with the user, and it's
all programable on the client side (my side)... not through the host
as with image maps and e-mail which require cgi scripts to be installed
in special directories by the host.

I didn't do it on this demo but... You are able to click on sprites
(icons) within the movie to go to other pages. You'll have control over
the movie... selecting various routes depending upon your needs or
answers. And the image size of the movie can be whatever you want...
not those little boxes you can hardly see.

And it's lots of fun.

WHAT'S THE DOWNSIDE?

Right now the only negative thing about it is the file size. This
demo is fairly small... only 46K. But then is doesn't do much, and
has no sound track. To do something fairly complex, with audio would
pump this up to 300 to 400K... and transmission rates right now are
too slow to handle this efficiently.

To make this an efficient medium we either have to compress these graphic
and audio (especially) files more... and increase transmission rates. Do
you have any doubt that one or both of these things will be happening in
the very near future?

I have little doubt that both these issues are being dealt with everyday,
and in time we may all have a T1 or T3 line... or equivilent. The Web is
here to stay... it's too big now not to address these problems. In the future
it will be interactive. I don't know if it will be with this particular
software or not, but right now it's the best thing going!

Okay... that should cover it 8-)

Best Regards,
Bob Mannle
