Re: Twin P&S synchronization

Some new and timely info regarding synchronizing twin point and
shoots: Ricoh has discontinued the electronic cable releases that
operate its whole line of P & S cameras. It still makes the cameras, the
cameras still have working sockets, but Ricoh customer service says the
company will probably never again sell the cable releases.

Customer service insists no one else makes a cable release that works
with Ricoh sockets, and every Ricoh dealer I've called (a dozen or more
across the country) confirms this. Don't believe them: I found a
"universal/canon" release, made by Tundra, $24, that works fine. But
don't count on your dealer knowing that.

Many Ricoh dealers say Ricoh will soon do away with the electronic
cable release socket altogether and go with the infrared scheme.

All this matters to twin-rig P & S 3Ders because Ricoh (as far as
I've been able to tell with lots and lots of calling and faxing
manufacturers) makes the only P & S cameras with plug in electronic
remote control sockets -- everyone else has gone to infrared remotes that
are set off by a TV-remote-style unit held way out in front of the
camera. Alan Lewis has already written about splicing two cable
releases together and setting two Ricohs of by pushing one button. Thats
certainly lots cheaper and safer for electronic dolts like me than
cutting into the innards of a couple $200 cameras, and likely more
accurate than any mechanical device designed to push the shutter release
buttons simultaneously.
