I've recently acquired a few scarce View-Master reels that have some rather
serious defects, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on repairing
reels. Examples of the defects are: warpage, delamination, and edge and
advance hole nicks. Specifically, I was wondering if there is a way of
pressing out warpage, and what type of glue would be best for repairing
delamination. The reels are worth a bit of effort.
Without any better suggestions, I was just going to look for a waterproof glue
that flows on for repairing the delamination. Regarding the nicks, I
am guessing that the best I can do is to press them back into as close to
'normal' as possible with a stylus. The damage to the advance holes is
actually the worst of the damage, because it prevents easy viewing. I am using
a model B viewer and turning the reel by hand in order to view the reels.
I am also guessing that removing the warpage will be the toughest of the
problems. I thought that pressing the reel while applying heat, and then
allowing the reel to cool while still under pressure might do it, but how much
heat can the glues and films take? I don't have very many common reels that
are warped which I can practice on . . .
Well, I hope someone has already learned these lessons and is willing to
instruct a beginner (Wolfgang, maybe?)
Regards,
Jim
