Dear Bob,

IMHO unless a reel is extremely extremely rare, I wouldn't "mess" with it.  
Too many things can go wrong i.e., misalignment.  

Additionally, from a collector's point of view, the item is no longer in is 
original state.  And I believe that if you ever sell/trade these items, 
the new owner should be told that alteration/restoration has taken place.
