Could be, but I think it's just a way to help overcome the impersonal
nature of the 'net, and perhaps just human curiosity.

I didn't submit one for the last expo, but AT LEAST I didn't just
submit a _FLAT_ photo of myself like someone did!!! I won't name
names, of course, cause that wouldn't be nice, would it Dan Shelley?

(insert as many ";)" as needed ;)

Do note that self-portraits and background info are optional in
expo 2, as the self-portraits were optional in expo 1.
