Cam-Comp .... a subsidiary of the Society of Photo Technologists
which sells tools, parts etc for camera repair have (or did have) a
pair of slip-jointed pliers with soft jaws which they sold for this purpose.

In fact, they look rather like something a plumber might carry and I have
since seen them at a plumbing repair store. Used with care, I've found
these to be rather good in removing stuck (external)  rings without 
damage.
