The film speed is the large number on the film box, maybe 100 or
400. Let's say you have 100. Set the shutter speed at 1/100 th of
a second; the dial should say 100, or if there is no 100, then 
125 is close enough. As long as you can see your shadow, and the 
shadow is shorter than you are, set the aperture at f/16. If you 
are shooting into open shade, or it's bright haze, use f/11. If
shadow longer than you are, but not twice as long, and not
hazy, use f/8. 

[Change 100 to 400 or 500 if that is your film speed.]

The "sunny 16" rule is sometimes better than the fancy fuzzy
logic meter on my Maxxum 700si (which is a very slick camera)
and hardly ever very far off. Otherwise, if the picture is
really worth taking, take three exposures, one a step higher,
one according to the rules, and the last a step lower.

Take notes!

The Ansel Adams books are a nice introduction. Don't worry
if your pictures don't match his; hardly anyone else comes
close.
