If I understand you correctly, your eyes work similarly to
the way mine does. I'm nearsighted (although not as strongly
as yourself) and I can free-view with great ease (and no
strain whatsoever) so long as I am not wearing my glasses
or my contact lenses. With them on, it's nearly impossible.
I'm only a couple years younger than you are.

Some people, like myself, don't subscribe to the Digest form.
I get the individual email-postings one at a time during
the day and -- I hope nobody is crushed -- I don't keep all
the postings, only rare selected ones. I can access the archives
on the Web as needed, but it isn't practical on a letter by
letter basis.

Having ">"'s puts the topic back into context for readers like
myself who have trouble remembering thread contexts. When I came
in this morning, I had more than 200 items in my email in-box
accumulated over the weekend, so postings need to be pretty
much self-contained without needing external references to remind
myself of the topic context. The ">"'s (usually called quoting)
is also done to put things into context for those who start
reading a discussion thread in the middle.

Your English is perfect and welcome to the list!
