Caution: metadiscussion ahead

It's come to my attention yet again that only a small percentage of
our 850+ members are actually reading the proceedings of this august
journal in their entirety. I've been corresponding with Ryko off list
about the problem. I have enormous respect for Ryko and his opinions.
Ryko suggests, as many of you have in the past, that the list should
be split up into more manageable, digestible, sizes.
On the plus side, you wouldn't have to listen to my techno-drivel any
more. On the minus side, you wouldn't have to listen to my techno-
drivel any more. 8-) Meaning, many of you wouldn't subscribe to the
theroreticians' list or the stereophotographers' list, or the camera
collectors' list, or the stereocard collectors' list, or the VM list,
etc, etc, because you wouldn't think you'd be interested, and in the
main, you'd be right. However, you'd also never learn a thing about
card collecting and it might well turn out you'd like card collecting
if you only read a couple of card collector's posts.
I guess it gets down to that age-old question of doing what's good for
you vs. doing what you ought to. 8-) Help! Save me from myself! 8-)
There's no real disadvantage to multiple lists; you can subscribe to
them all. Of course the moderator group may have a completely different
take on this! It's a lot more work if subscribers have to be put into
the correct pigeonhole instead of thrown all into the same bucket.
Another problem is that when you have a technical question, you'll
temporarily subscribe to the 3D technobabble list and ask your question...
which as it turns out was asked and thoroughly and completely answered
1.5 days ago. So the responsible subscriber will have to check the
archives before asking a question on a list he has just joined. Always
true, but even more true if we're going to be doing the equivalent of
room-hopping at the stereo convention.
The advantages are obvious. A more manageable (and user-adjustable)
number of posts per day for the subscriber. The friendlier feel that
a small group of friends has.
So whaddaya think?
Thanks,
John B
