You certainly don't need f16 all the time. You can get everything sharp
with even f5.6, depending on the subject. Remember that in the 50s, the
sunny day rule (marked also in many Realist cameras with a red dot) was
calling for an aperture between 5.6 and 8 at 1/50s (with ASA 8 Kodachrome)
But, except for very special situations, I will not use a small DOF to make
the foreground pop out from an out-of-focus background.
