$30 tripod from H&R

One or two (or maybe three) weeks ago there was discussion on this list
of a $29.95 tripod from the surplus firm Herbach and Rademan. I had
already ordered one, and it just arrived today. It seems to be pretty
well made, but not as good as the $100 units in our local high-class
camera store.
It has three sections, a geared center column, an adequate head
which is smooth enough for video camera panning, and weighs about
five pounds, which is light enough for back-packing. Locking the
leg height is very easy. It held our massive Mamiya-flex TLR, so
should be able to handle any 35mm format well enough. Comes
from Taiwan.
I consider it something of a bargain, but not in the same class
as the Star-D tripod I got for $10 at a garage sale years ago
and later lost on a back-packing trip.
This H&R catalog is 108 pages. I've dealt with them since I
was an undergraduate in Brooklyn, before 1951. Lots of bargains,
except when I factor in the cost of storing all the potentially
useful gadgets that somehow never get incorporated into something
useful. I will use the tripod, but the microprocessor controlled
light dimmer I couldn't resist getting might have to sit for a
few weeks.
