I used to develop my own slide film, back when I didn't need 6 hours of sleep per night. The main problem is temperature control. I would set the hot water at a trickle as soon as I decided to do it, to warm up the pipe evenly, and never change it the whole evening. Best if the wife and kids were away, or at least no baths, showers, dish-washing, or clothes-washing. Temperature control via the cold water tap.
Measuring the temperature is pretty important. I happen to have a very nice thermometer left over from my chemist days. If not, I would borrow one for one day, fill a sink with water at the temperature E-6 demands, and note what _my_ thermometer said. Then, if I were in my right mind, I would write it in the little notebook I used to keep with developing information.
Results were about as good as Kodak's.
