I thought I'd add my theory to the "demise of 3D, the superior form of photography."
When photography was a pain (wet plates, large formats only, you had to do your own developing, etc., etc., etc.) Stereo Photography fit in quite well for the hobbyist or professional who cared to commit to such rigors. Through the years, the state of photography has evolved such that whoever has all the bells and whistles at market price is the winner (I still can't believe top line SLR's have those puny little pop up flashes to satisfy the point and shooters.).
While Stereo needs precision and thought in both execution and display, look how little is required of the SLR/P&S camera users. Note, I didn't call them photographers, and I don't want to dwell on definitions at this point. I simply want to point out that the masses are looking to make their picture taking as easy as possible. That is why (IMHO) Stereo Photography is a fad for the masses of today. They may say "WOW!" when they see some good stereo slides in my Realist red button viewer, even to the point of asking what it takes to do this 3D thing. But I find there are very few individuals I've taken beyond the "WOW" stage and into involvement.
If stereo photography (good stereo photography) can be made simple for the masses, only then will it be more than a fad. I'm not visionary enough to see where stereo photography will ultimately end up. I only hope there are enough among us to commit, lead or just go along for the ride (like me) :-).
