The small base makes it a specialized 3-d camera. Works great for close-ups or images for projection. Projection and computer viewing "compensates" for the shorter base. John B. has discussed this in great depth. I am oversimplifying here...

Eric, I suspect that you got a good deal on these. Will block light from the sides and potentially increase the contrast, but I doubt that you will notice any difference... Will reduce risk of light flare. The filter-holder might be more important... or the looks...
