I think it still may be a camera problem.  I use a Vivitar 283 and a Minolta
280 flash on my Realist format cameras (is this the format you are talking
about?).  Both flashes are rated to cover a 35mm lens on a full frame 35mm
camera, so a Realist format 35mm lens is really more like a full frame 50mm
normal lens due to the smaller format.  
To make my use even more difficult, I mount these on a flash bracket set
about 3" to the side of the camera body, way off center.  I have never had
any corner darkening using a Wirgin and Kodak stereo.   Perhaps if you are
taking very close pictures the flash location might matter though. 
Another area that would cause corner darkening is a lens design that doesn't
fully cover the image format.  What aperture are you using the flash at?
