Sorry, I forgot the bottom line:

To avoid darkening, especially horizontally, with your Realist pictures
use only flashes (heads, settings) that fully cover the 35 mm focal length.

Most flashes will do that.

The Realist 3.5 is known to darken the corners (I will not even attempt to
spell the word that describes the phenomenon) at f16 and f22 apertures.

In Patrick's case I don't think that any of these conditions were met...
