Derek, I think that your original idea was presented clearly...

Here is the point:  If after spending $150 you no better off than buying
a $100 red-button, then why bother?

There is nothing special in these plans.  For a viewer you need a
rectangular box with two holes for the lenses, space for the nose.  The
rest are details... I looked for the references but could not find them... 
I know that they are in my first catalog but don't have any copies around.
I'll look for them tomorrow...and I will give you a copy of the article
when I see you next week. -- GAT
