I would try teflon grease.  You can get a large tube of it at Radio
Shack for a modest price, or a small tube of at a sporting goods store
(for fishing reels) for a more impressive, but still modest price.

It is a nearly clear grease that won't rub black marks off on
everything, and it is a good multi-purpose lubricant.

Be sure to clean the old grease off thoroughly (no matter what grease
you are going to use), and apply a modest amount of new grease.  Try to
put it only where it is needed, that is, where you can see friction
marks from previous use.  You can always add more if you find you missed
a spot.
