No, assuming that the shot is of California Ave, it is about 4 miles west
of downtown. (well, to be exact, its four miles straight west of the
water tower, which is half a mile north of the loop. Inside the loop is
not a slum. It's the central business district. But, I guess that
makes it a corporate slum. :) And parts of the loop are pretty
dangerous, even during the day. Like at the Board of Trade. On the
floor, If you don't know what you're doing, the locals will
surely take advantage of you, and you'll lose your shirt!
Now that I can see the building, I'm more convinced that the building is
c. 1890. You know, I think I'll go the extra mile here
and print out the view & drag it over to the historical society on
Friday. I've been meaning to bring some nineteenth century chicago
stuff I have down there to investigate for, oh about two years now.
This is as good an excuse as any. Of course, you can see by the length
of time I've waited that even when I want to go its a long shot (and I
used to work 3 blocks from there when I bought most of these views ...)
