Re: Hacker's Haven-- NSA 1997
#
#I like your idead. Count me if you can!
#
#At NSA/ISU Atlanta '95 the "Internet" group met. A room and time
#were arranged by someone who should get the credit, but credit gets
#lost all to often...(sorry)
#
#One note: It is wise to START THE MEETING with the definite
#impression that someone is in charge! It is not possible to
#sieze power effectively once the notion of anarchy is widespread.
#
#Even the fist-fight was disorganized. ;-)
#... Not that it wasn't fun, mind you!
#Oh, it WAS fun, but a lot of PR makeup work had to be done off-line
#because the "What/Who are we?"; "How/What do I do to connect?"; "How
#do I get/What is e-mail?"; etc. questions weren't answered clearly
#in the chaos.
I think the biggest problem was that many of us from the list
went thinking it was supposed to be like NSA Milwaukee '94 - a bunch
of us met in the motel lobby, exchanged views, updated our mental
images of each other (sometimes drastically) and generally had a
good time.
In Atlanta '95, I went thinking I was attending another of those.
Unfortunately, non-photo-3d people attended the meeting, expecting
a "this is who we are, and how to get on board" presentation, which
of course was not planned or prepared. Those attending the meeting
with that in mind, certainly didn't get what they needed.
I think it was just a simple misunderstanding, but that no one
considered it ahead of time. A little more careful billing of
it as "a chance for the _members_ of photo-3d to meet each
other in person", with possibly a _second_ meeting, an
informational meeting for those _interested_ in photo-3d,
being in order.
Joel.
