I have done this sucessfully with a Polaroid "SprintScan 35" slide scanner.
I don't know how much they sell for in the USA, so couldn't comment as too
suitability from a price point-of-view.
I put the slide into the carrier edge-side towards the bottom, so the image
produced is at 90 degrees to what is required - but it's no problem to
rotate/flip the scanned image using Photoshop so its right-side-up.
At first I built a 2"x2" mount with a slot in one side so I could use it as
a "carrier" for the stereo mount (the slide scanner gate is designed for
2"x2" of course), but then I found in practice it wasn't necessary, as the
spring loaded gate could locate a stereo slide on its side OK without the
carrier I had made.
