No, it's not grainy; in fact I think it's the best possible diffuser you could
get.  The drafting mylars come in single-side frosting/coating and double-sided
varieties.  The 7.5-mil double-sided Keuffel & Esser (K&E) "Herculene Drafting
Film" is the most superior.  However, the most common types (because of cost)
are the 4-mil single-coated stock.  

The Photogrammetric Mapping Community has been using it for decades.
