nifty fifties

          Patrick from Belgium asks:

"...are there any other people around here, who have a
          weak-spot for fifties aesthetics?"

Yes indeedy. I enjoy the sleek rounded shaping
and aluminum/gold coated luster of the TDC Colorist line.
They were the most aesthetically pleasing of all the fifties
cameras. My 3-D initiate friend, Bruce, also enjoys
Fifties-a-bilia and also collected flattie rangefinders of
that period. At Atlanta, Jon Golden showed me slides of his
radio/electronics collection from that period and
earlier. Other stereo aquaintices go for the retro-look, too
(expect for the already-adult, 1st generation Realist users,
who don't know what the fuss is all about :-) ). I am most
partial to the "Populuxe," "Googie-Diner," "Space-Age" later
fifties/early sixties look, Jetsons and all (hence, as I
often repeat, I COLLECT stereo slides of the WORLD FAIRS and
other designy sights of that era!). I like the fun shape,
color, innovation and (even if naive) optimism reflected in
that era's design. Also, as Patrick's and my birthdate
bear-out, it's theorized that adults are often most
interested in the period surrounding their birth. I
personally shrug at the late 60's/early 70's
grunge/neo-tiedye/proto-polyester rehash I see among the
GenX folks, just as my parents generation aren't too wisful
          about the 50's.

Anyway, if I ever get my own web page, (HAH!), I'll have to
post some of my slide collection of the people and sights of
that era. Some of the unusual faces and fashions I've
collected are like perfect movie stills: brimming with
imagined stories and personalities. It's like being a
time-traveling voyeur. I almost feel guilty looking! In
fact, during my more manic moments, I see the outlines of a
creepy suspense story...but that's another topic, another
          time...

          See Yah Later, Aligator,

          LS
